BASSWOOD CARVINGS
The Basswood Tree or American Linden Tree has a soft creamy wood which is favored by
woodcarvers because of its workability and its even grain.  In past years it was used to make
ship's figureheads and cigar-store Indians.  The Linden Tree is a large tree, growing up to 130 feet
tall with a trunk diameter of 2 to 3 feet.  Each carving starts as a solid block of work which is then
carved into an old world Santa Clause  or one of many other collectible characters.  The carvings
are painted with oils and allowed to dry for several days.  The final stage includes a clear acrylic
coat and hand rubbing to bring out the beauty of the wood.  Each piece is signed by the artist.
